I was on the lookout for new (to me) classics, and a friend recommended I gave Elizabeth Gaskell a try. This was her favourite, so I figured it was as good a place as any to start.It's a very pleasant comfort book. There's not a whole lot of a plot, but just a general description of life in the village of Cranford. I did think it stopped rather suddenly though.
